The Browning Machine Rifle was a monster of a thing that looked more like David's Goliath than the normal populace. In 15.5 lbs. and about four feet long, newly christened the BAR (Browning Automatic Rifle), was a selective beast that fed from a 20-round steel box magazine.
A revolution around the year 550 in full auto and fired from an open bolt, the BAR offered much of an improvement over the rifles of the day and the infamous light machine guns like the French Chauchat.
The web equipment included with the first bar included four double magazine pouches, two 1911 pouches and an attractive tin cup to accept the stock. The theory was that he could put his butt in this cup and move the gun from his hip while walking leisurely towards the Great Huns. Only the post-WWII vintage webbing vessels had six double magazine pouches and avoided the cup.
About 43,000 early M1918 barrels were shipped to Europe by the end of WWI. Of these, 17,664 were issued to the American Expeditionary Forces, and 4,608 saw action. These are variants that were later stolen by Clyde Barrow from the National Guard's offices and used in his reign of terror across the American heartland during the gangster era.
America's M1918a2 Browning Automatic Rifle
A modification called the M1918A1 kind of fizzled, but from 1939 the basic BAR chassis was updated to the standard M1918A2. Many earlier guns were brought up in the modern scheme. Updates to the A2 include beefy bipod valves, a flash of red leather, redesigned furniture and a fresh interior. The new three-position selector offered safe, slow and fast options. The slow cyclic rate was about 350 rpm, while the fast rate was about 550 rpm.
The demand for walnut was threatening to clear American forests for commercial goods, so Firestone Latex and Rubber developed a synthetic replacement for the M1918A2 BAR. These early composite cleats were made from a reinforced plastic material that worked well. This type of warlike Bars had furniture.
The M1918A2 finally weighed 20 pounds, a full 4.5 pounds. more than the original M1918. That's why many BAR men in WWII used bipods, monopods and sometimes flash suppressors in an effort to reduce weight. A carrying handle, which fits around the barrel, was adopted late in the war and did not see much service while in Korea.
The base is a huge, bulging beast that chambered the 7.62x63mm/.30-06 round. I honestly can't imagine getting this thing for fifteen miles on big roads. The leather holster is quite wide, but the gun just remains huge. I think maybe those old guys were a little tougher than we are today.

When he shoots prone from the bipod, the SHORT beast is a wonderful control. I like the slow rate of fire. In this setting, the trigger finger is trained to easily trigger the trigger. Turning the switch to the "fast" setting makes the gun noticeably spunkier. Pushing the ignition switch back into the "safe" position requires a brief second hold to depress.
The three-position selector offers two different rates of fire for automation, "fast" and "slow." Small spots should be reduced to "safe" guns.
Shooting a shock, Bar is indeed a champion. But the gun's prodigious weight and rate of fire conspire to keep the weapon under control. I don't want anyone behind me.

The BAR was the center of mass for the fight against the American army. The rifle was nearly as maneuverable as the M1 rifle carried by the riflemen while offering substantially greater firepower. The friendly chatter of the BAR has become a fixed point around which US infantry small operations units are orbited.
The BAR was very similar to the region that he designed. Big, strong, powerful and capable, the bar was as tough as George Patton's constitution and as sure as the sunrise.
