Fort Benning, Ga. - The State Judge Advocate General's Office at Fort Benning officially opened its new consolidated location on July 29, 2019.

Newly integrated services include administrative law, claims, legal aid, legal defense services, special victim counseling and the Tax Center during tax season. Prior to the opening of the new building, the various offices of the Justices' Staff Attorney's Office were located at various locations on Benning Circle and the main post in the Military Service Buildings.

Capt. Steven Millwood, an administrative law attorney, said combining their services will help SJA clients.

"This is a great relief for servicemen and their families as well as pensioners as all their legitimate needs will be met in this one building," he said. "They no longer have to go through multiple buildings to get legal help," he said.

Administrative law attorney Capt. Kathryn Gorski is pleased with the opening due to the continued operation of the office.

"Now that we're finally coming together under one building, that's a big deal for us," Gorski said.

"The two departments that work closely together every day are the Military Justice and the Legal Protection Service. I think it is very useful and convenient to have those two departments under one roof. The other one sits side by side and asks questions. .

"I often have questions for other criminal or defense attorneys," Gorski continued. "We don't think of ourselves as different, and we're all lawyers, so it's good to be together."

The ribbon for the new building was cut by Staff Judge Advocate Col. Jackie Thompson and Col. Matthew Scalia, Commander of the US Garrison at Fort Benning.

Georgia Legislators Visit Fort Benning

The former facility was built in 1911, eight years before Camp Benning was established, and was the second oldest building on post. At first, the building was used as a dairy creamery. It later became an officers' mess in 1919, and later became the first permanent post headquarters in 1924.

From 1924 to 1964, several other tenants occupied the original building, including the headquarters of the Infantry School, general staff, chaplaincy, legal offices, and the infantry examination board. He had legal offices from 1948 to 2009. In 2009, an ex-serviceman set fire to the building, destroying many items of historical importance and the law library, which contained government property and personal belongings of military and civilian employees who worked there.

The ceremonial opening of the new premises coincided with the 244th anniversary of the General Prosecutor's Corps. General George Washington established the Judge Advocate General of the United States on July 29, 1775, shortly after becoming the Continental Commander.

For Buckner, most of the tour was at his home, as the 137th District covers parts of Fort Benning and the surrounding community.

"Growing up in Columbus, my sister worked at a civil service station, and I knew my dad's job was that he was on base," Buckner said. "As a private citizen, visiting Fort Benning always makes me so grateful for the dedication and sacrifices of our American military."

The group toured the National Infantry Museum, joined a keynote session and learned about conservation efforts on issues ranging from protected animals to wildfires.
